2020 forced a lot of companies to go remote, and most companies had to re-engineer training to fit into our virtual world. As we move toward a hybrid work environment, we must consider how we train people in person versus how we train people remotely. So how do you begin to build a training program?

Rather listen than read? In this episode of Test. Learn. Grow., we’re talking to Account Coordinator and Operations Specialist Allyn Reynolds who will dive into the world of training and discuss why it’s critical to every facet of business. 

Building a training program: 

First, you start with the end in mind. The key goal here is to understand what you want people to learn. What do you want people to walk away with? What is the end result? 

Second, define your KPI’s: How are you going to use data to assess whether you’re successful or not? 

Third, what is the actual content itself? How do we teach them the things that we’re measuring and ultimately learning? This is the easiest part once you’ve nailed down what you’re driving toward. 

What about the remote aspect of training? 

The largest component is flexibility. It’s important to think about where other people are and meet them there. While it can be challenging, it requires you to be thoughtful in your approach and see the human in front of you. Work with the individual as a genuine person and consider their strengths and circumstances. We don’t want to put learning on them as a task of the job. Instead, it should be a collaborative endeavor between training staff and new hires. Then the new hires feel supported, and this creates a sense of partnership, one of our core values. There is no “one size fits all” approach. 

Why is this important? 

One thing that makes Level unique and successful is how much our training staff love training and genuinely want our employees to learn.  

Hiring people can be such an arduous process, and it is expensive for companies to find and retain quality talent. Therefore, when companies find talent, they must make sure to train them well, and make them feel like part of the company culture. If you can’t train employees, you can’t build your business because you can’t keep employees, which leads to a never-ending cycle of training. This makes it impossible to scale the business. 

Training is an ongoing process that continues past the first couple of weeks. Companies need to continue to train their employees and value their most important asset: the people.
