Two years ago, a Maryland homeowner curious about solar typed “homeowner’s guide to solar panels” into Google and worked through a page of results. Today that homeowner is more likely to ask Google’s AI Overview or ChatGPT for the “best solar in Maryland” and take the answer that comes back in seconds.

Solar Energy World, the Laurel, Maryland installer, appears in roughly 30% of monitored AI answers about solar in its markets, the highest AI visibility of the five regional brands tracked alongside it (Writesonic Brand Radar, August 2026). That position traces back to a deliberate local SEO for AI search strategy and paid media built market by market.

Who is Solar Energy World?

Solar Energy World is a residential and commercial solar installation company headquartered in Laurel, Maryland. Founded in 2009, the company has installed more than 300 megawatts of solar and ranks as the #4 residential solar installer in the United States on Solar Power World’s 2026 Top Solar Contractors List. Its own W-2 crews serve homeowners across Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida, and Washington, DC, handling every project from consultation through installation and ongoing service.

Homeowners choose between owning and leasing their panels, with hands-on guidance through the state and federal incentive programs that shape the final price.

Founded 2009
Headquarters Laurel, Maryland
Service area MD, VA, DE, PA, NJ, FL, and Washington, DC
National ranking #4 residential solar installer, Solar Power World 2026 Top Solar Contractors List
Google ratings 4.6 stars in Maryland, 4.8 in New Jersey

The ranking, announced in July 2026, marks a two-spot climb on Solar Power World’s annual Top Solar Contractors List and follows more than 30% year-over-year growth in residential installation volume.

AI answers changed how homeowners search for solar

The same compression runs across Solar Energy World’s entire keyword set, where queries that once ran a dozen words now run three or four:

Before AI answers Since AI answers
“homeowner solar incentives in Maryland” “maryland solar incentives”
“how many solar panels does a home need” “solar companies near me”

AI answers absorbed much of the solar category’s research-stage traffic almost overnight, and the homeowners who still click through arrive far closer to a decision.

When Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, or Gemini recommend a local installer, they lean heavily on local listings and local backlinks as evidence, a weighting that has reshaped local strategy even more than the shortened queries.

Solar comparison sites dominate the organic rankings for most solar queries, making it difficult for any single brand to win directly. Earning citations inside AI answers has become the new local battleground.

Local SEO for AI search meant rebuilding the pages and the links

Level’s local SEO for AI search work started with the state pages. Each market originally ran on a single broad page built for the long-query era, so Level rebuilt every state around intent: a main state page supported by dedicated cost and incentive subpages, each refined through CRO testing.

For the second rebuild, Level turned to links, running a local backlink program that earns 15 to 20 high-authority placements per month across news, local, and renewable energy sites, all pointing to Solar Energy World’s revenue-driving pages. Those placements work twice, building the ranking authority Google rewards and feeding the third-party sources AI platforms cite when they answer solar questions in Solar Energy World’s markets.

The third rebuild covered Google Business Profile listings across four states, from listing basics through review response.

GA4, Ahrefs, and Writesonic tracking through 2026 shows what the local program has produced so far:

  • Clicks to the state pages grew 89% over three months
  • Organic conversion rate across the six core states climbed from 3.4% to 4.4%
  • Organic conversions grew 34% while sessions grew just 2%
  • Ahrefs domain rating climbed eight points past the program’s target
  • Google Business Profile interactions more than doubled at every location, with search appearances up 78% in New Jersey and 59% in Maryland
  • AI visibility climbed from 26% to 31% within the first three weeks of tracking

Paid media that reads each market

On the paid side, Level leaned into Google’s AI Max and Performance Max to keep Solar Energy World present in results where AI Overviews now appear. Maryland, the company’s home market and strongest brand footprint, served as the proving ground. Level activated the AI-driven campaign types there first and validated the lift through period-over-period analysis before rolling the framework out to the remaining territories.

Campaigns respect the dedicated zip codes Solar Energy World services, so Level balances market-level control against the data volume the algorithms need, scaling budget and asset groups where efficiency and lead goals justify it.

The creative side follows a system tuned to a category where offers and regulations change fast:

  • We leverage Meta as a strategic testing ground, rigorously validating creative assets before deploying proven winners to Performance Max.
  • Assets are versioned out by state, with distinct visuals for Northeast markets and Florida
  • Messaging tracks offers, incentives, and regulatory changes so campaigns stay compliant the moment a program shifts
  • When Maryland’s Utility Relief Act reset the state’s net metering timeline, Maryland-specific creative went live within the month

“Search is changing quickly, and homeowners are finding information and making decisions in very different ways than they did even a few years ago. Level has been a true partner in helping us stay ahead of those changes while keeping our focus on what matters most, which is reaching homeowners in the markets we serve and turning that visibility into real growth. Their team brings a thoughtful, data-driven approach to everything from SEO and paid media to our website and creative, and we’ve seen the impact across the business.”
